Elections 02 May 2019 - Do You want to be a Parish Councillor?

posted 12 Mar 2019, 03:52 by Pirton Parish Clerk
Parish and Town Council elections will take place on 02 May 2019.
All details can be found on the Electoral Commission website, including nomination packs for those who wish to stand.
The pack is self-explanatory and has a handy check list so that you can’t forget anything.

The notice of election will be published no later than Tue 26 March 2019 and completed nomination papers have to be hand delivered to the NHDC Council Offices, Gernon Road, Letchworth by 4pm on Wed 3 April 2019.
NHDCs preferred option for nomination papers is that the candidate ( or their representative) phones and  makes an  appointment to see Julie Williams in NHDC electoral services on 01462 474305, when their papers can be checked onto the system and immediately corrected if
there are any mistakes.
Or
The candidate or their representative can hand their nomination papers in to reception or put them in the NHDC Post box on the side of the Council Offices. This must be done in plenty of time so they can be returned for correction if there are  mistakes - otherwise the papers are invalid.

There are certain eligibility criteria regarding ‘local connections’ which are listed in the nomination pack..
These include:
You are least 18 years old
You are a British Citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a
citizen of any member state of the European Union
and
Meet at least one of the following four qualifications:
a. You are, and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the parish/community in which you wish to stand from the day of your nomination onwards.
b. You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the parish/community area during the whole of the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election.

d. You have lived in the parish/community area or within three miles of it during the whole of the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election.

The nomination pack also contains information on what disqualifies you from standing as a candidate.
This includes:

You are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order
You have been sentenced to a prison term of three months or more, without the option of a fine, at any time during the five years before polling day.
